Timetable change for Samurai Students

Dear Adult & Samurai Members,

I hope you are all well and that you are motivated about your lot in life and in particular your involvement with your Karate/Self Defence studies with us.

I wish to advise that there is a change to the training times for our Samurai students for the next 3 weeks.  There will be no specific Samurai classes for this period of time.
Samurai students are invited to train in their corresponding Adult Classes held at our Academy, both Morning and Evenings; for example, if you are in the Samurai Basic Club you will attend the Adult Basic Club Class and similarly for the other class categories.  Please refer to our Adult classes on our Website here.  If you have any concerns on your class times please call me personally on 0419 683 564 and I will be only too pleased to assist you.  This change of training times will finish week ending Saturday 29th August.

ALL STUDENTS, also a friendly reminder that next Wednesday, 12th August, is a public holiday in Brisbane and no classes will be held on this day.

Best wishes,
SHIHAN

KAGAMI BARAKI

Tuesday 6/1/09

The Kagami Baraki  Training is traditionally the name for the first day of training for the relevant
year within our International Organisation “International Karate-Do Shobukai (IKS)”.  On the
first day of training in each member country of IKS, local Academies meet at the Honbu Dojo
(headquarters) in a spirit of good will to renew old acquaintences, to meet new members and
generally exchange greetings for the new year.  Training is followed by a short social function.
All students who attend the training are expected to attend the social.  Each attending
member is requested to provide a plate of food for the table
– Christmas fruit, sandwiches,
savouries, etc.

I would like to take this opportunity to briefly thank all members who have combined and
worked together for a very successful AAMA in 2008.  I will make personal contact with all
these valuable members in the very near future.

I wish everyone a Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year!  I look forward to seeing you
in 2009.

Best wishes,
SHIHAN

Graduation: Thursday 3 April 5:00 - 6:00pm

The Graduation for the Little Leopards and Dragons for this Summer Module is on Thursday 3 April 5:00 – 6:00pm.

Please arrive 10 minutes before the commencement of the Graduation Event so we can have a smooth running event for all involved.

As can be seen in the amended training times below, children’s training times are altered during the School holiday period. CHILDREN'S GAMES DAY WITH FRIENDS
Tuesday 11th December & 13th December 2007

Dear AAMA Parents and Guardians,

We are excited to let you know about our “Children’s Games Day with Friends” – hour long lessons held on both Tuesday, 11 December and Thursday, 13 December, 2007 from 5:00 - 6:00pm both days.

This event will be a fantastic way for your child/ren to introduce the art and sport of Karate they enjoy to all their friends. Karate has such a wide range of benefits for all who practice it, especially children. We would like this event to give families the opportunity to pass the benefits your child/ren receive from classes, plus more, onto your children’s friends and your family friends.

We have started distributing forms to the Children’s classes (Little Leopards & The Dragons). These forms are to let us know which children and their friends are attending so we can be best prepared for the classes to be exceptionally fun, inspiring, motivating, interactive and educational for the children attending. The emergency contact details and information of the friends attending is important, so please take the time to fill this information in.

We look forward to receiving your forms back at your earliest convenience. Please do not hesitate if you have any questions regarding this event and it would be our pleasure if you would like us to call any parents regarding this event with details.

Thanking you,

Sempai Bryony
Children’s Programme Director

FUJIMOTO Sensei's Visit November 16 - 21, 2007

Sensei FUJIMOTO is Shihan Graham KELEHER's teacher and last visited Australia in 2005 and is visiting again this year! Sensei Fujimoto is a well recognised figure in International Karate as:
Japan's past National Coach, a renowned Japanese Coach raising many National and International Champions past and present, a disciplined Karate player with his strenuous and disciplined daily personal training; a Karate devotee dedicated to promoting Karate Internationally in many countries including Australia; and much, much more.

Australian Academy of Martial Arts Adult and Samurai members are very lucky to have the pleasure of Sensei FUJIMOTO's instruction in November 2007 from the 16th to 21st.

Please refer to the training schedule over this period of time for your class - So you do not miss your chance to train under Sensei FUJIMOTO.

AAMA Adult & Senior Children's Recreation & Training Camp

We welcome to the Camp all members of the Academy. We especially encourage and welcome the newer members and the lower graded students. The Camp will be a new learning experience for those who haven’t attended before. The training schedule will be concentrated and will include 1 session on Friday night, 3 sessions on Saturday and 2 on Sunday.

The Camp will have many benefits for all grades. It will be directed at preparation for FUJIMOTO Sensei’s visit, will also assist in preparing tournament players for the forthcoming Championships and generally all members for forthcoming grading examinations. Thus skill development and improvement will be maximized giving each student every opportunity in their pursuit of success. The Camp should not be missed by any serious Karate player.

Between training sessions, you are free to relax and rest; enjoy the sun and surf; socialize with other Club members; use the other recreation and sporting facilities at the Camp site (Prior Permission may be required from Shihan) or visit other places of interest on the North Coast.

CHILDREN:- Children will share the camp, meals etc. with adult members; however, they will follow an amended training schedule. Between training sessions, children will be supervised at all times.

To receive discounts of your Camp prices, please read the Forms distributed in classes for more information!!

See you all there!

AAMA Adult Match Practice
- Here is an Event You Should Not Miss!

Hi Adult & Samurai Members,
Up-coming “Adult Match Practice”
on Sunday 4th November.

For novices, the purpose of this event is to give you the opportunity to commence your experience with Karate as a sport in an encouraging and supportive environment.  The day will consist of matches organised with compatible Academy mates.  This is not a tournament but rather matches where members will have participation with certificates, fun and learning as the prizes!

For experienced competitors, matches will also be arranged with other members of similar experience and abilities.

Samurai are invited and encouraged to attend this event also!

I encourage all eligible members to participate in this event and take advantage of the opportunities.

Please contact myself, Sempai Bryony or Sempai Maxine if you need further information.

Best wishes,

Shihan

Karate Kid Championship
November 2007

Dear Parents,

The Karate Kid Championship is an exciting event for our children in the Little Leopards, Dragons & Samurai Classes! Beside the fun aspect, the event exposes them to other facets of Karate, which assists in their ‘Character’ development. Their performance is also taken into consideration for their next Grading Assessments.

Details are as follows:

Date: Sunday 4 November 2007
Time Commences 8:00am (please arrive by 7:45am. Finishing time will be estimated after all entries have been received. We will endeavour to keep the tournament within a four (4) hours time frame.
Venue: Cavendish Road State High School: Sports Hall
Competitors Entry Fee: $20.00
Entries Close: Thursday 1 November 2007

Events and the appropriate grades of entry are as per Entry Form distributed in classes.

We have included the following paragraph for information of parents who are not familiar with Australian Academy of Martial Arts Tournaments:

Usually, sport is contested by athletes from many different organisations or clubs with the participating clubs and athletes sole objective of ‘being the best at any cost’ and with first place taking precedence over all else. This sole objective can unwisely create feelings of tremendous pressure in our children such as anxiety, personal inadequacies and fear of losing, just to name a few. This event will involve maximum participation from those attending with matches run in an encouraging, positive and healthy atmosphere.

We look forward to receiving entry forms from our Little Leopards, Dragons & Samurai by Thursday 1 November 2007!

Changes to Training Times for AAMA
Adult Morning Classes

Hi AAMA Adult Members,

We are about to commence the 3rd week of the second module in our exciting new Rotational Curriculum. The system is moving like clock work and I am very motivated by the continual positive and supportive feedback that I receive almost daily from both students and Instructors. Our new stripe system of monitoring attendance has been well received also and again much appreciation has been forwarded to us by members - Thanks to all of you.

Unfortunately, we have found it necessary to make CHANGES TO OUR TRAINING TIMES FOR THE ADULT MORNING CLASSES (6AM - 7AM). The`se changes will COMMENCE FROM NEXT WEEK MONDAY 14TH MAY.

The adult morning classes will be as follows for this date:

Monday 6:00 am - 7:00 am Combined Black Belt Club (Level 1 & 2) and Black Belts

Tuesday 6:00 am - 7:00 am Combined Black Belt Club (Level 1 & 2) and Basic Club

Thursday 6:00 am - 7:00 am Combined Black Belts & Basic Club

Friday No Morning Classes

Saturday 8:00 am - 9:00am Basic Club

9:00 am - 10:00 am Black Belt Club (Level 1 & 2) and Black Belts

I apologise for any inconvenience caused to members who train in the morning class due to the short notice given.

I would also like to remind the members who train in the evening classes that these morning classes are also available to you. They are very invigorating and set a wonderful personal tempo for you to commence the day. I look forward to welcoming you there.

I request that the members who normally train in the morning class, forward me an email by return to confirm that you have received this message of change.

Best wishes,
Shihan

Success: 2007 AAMA Autumn Camp
Up-Coming Holidays
Module 2 for Adults and Samurai

Dear AAMA Members and Parents,

We would like to thank all the participants of our 2007 Autumn AAMA Training and Recreational Camp! We congratulate all members who attended from Shunpukan (Wishart Dojo) as well as those members that came from external schools to which Shihan is a Technical Advisor. We congratulate the new members who came along and enjoyed the experience with such enthusiasm and vigour. We have received only positive and raving feedback from participants about the in-depth studies of our personal Self Defence and Safety, Will in what we do and our true potential in succeeding in all we truly put our minds to.

Shihan, with such a wealth of experience (as a police officer, a self defence instructor to the police, decades of competing and coaching in both State, National and International scenes, a member of the World Karate Federation Technical Committe, over 35 years experience in instructing and coaching karate/self defence to students such as ourselves, and so on and so on!) passed on an insurmountable amount of knowledge to participants in just one weekend over 6 training sessions starting the afternoon of Friday 20 April continuing at 6am both mornings as well as non stop conversations with students during breaks and at night! Shihan has run over 40 camps spanning 35 years - rain, hail or shine; this camp was once again topping international standards in instruction and interaction for all levels: from senior Children, beginner Adults up to Adult Black Belts - only through years of experience, understanding and devotion from the head instructor can such a huge range of students be constantly involved and satisfied!

How can you top a camp that had such cathartic Content and Instruction set on the beach side interacting with other enthusiastic members!?

Well, I'm sure the next camp: our 2007 Spring AAMA Training and Recreational Camp, will sure stand to the challenge! Keep your ears open and keep your diaries ready to keep time aside so you can participate!

Congratulations and thank you to the supporting instruction from Sensei Perry Hamilton, Sensei Bob Scott and Sempai Murry Burrows - we thank you also for encouraging your students to attend.

Our 2nd Module commences this Monday 30th April, 2007: We encourage and look forward to your enthusiasm and progression in this next module for both Adults and Samurai beginning!

Up-coming Holidays: Please also note for your diaries the up-coming public holiday 7 May, 2007 (Labour Day) - as per usual, there is no training on this day. We also thank and wish all mothers a relaxing enjoyable day this month with Mother's Day (13/5/07).

Best wishes,

Sports Karate Competitions for
our AAMA Children

Hi AAMA Parents & Guardians,

There have been enquiries from a few parents about childrens' Sports Karate - what's available, my thoughts and guidance on it, etc., etc.. I had hoped to have held an 'Information for Parents' meeting regarding the matter in February; however, owing to my excuses, it unfortunately hasn't happened. You can see from my last email to you that April is hectic. I have therefore decided before another month flies by to hold a meeting this Monday evening 2nd April at 7pm to discuss Sports Karate for Children. Sorry for the late notice. The tournament scene on a Club, Local, State, National and International Level for both Kata and Kumite will be open for discussion. Most of my Karate life I have been involved in Sports Karate - State & National Team Member; 15 years as Qld. Coach (Seniors and Juniors), 3 years on the World Karate Federation Technical Committee including jurisdiction in this position at the World Championships in Sun City South Africa.

Some of you may be aware of the tremendous success our Academy has had in Sports Karate over the past years and in fact spanning back almost 30 years. During a majority of these 30 years you could say that we have dominated the tournament scene in Qld. and were also prominent in National and International meets. From this extensive involvement and experience I feel I can advise with some authority.

I will also advise you on our exciting new training and grading curriculum for our Dragons and Little Leopards, which will come into vogue in the next few weeks. Please feel free to raise any other matters relevant to your child/children's training with us.

I hope to see you on Monday night. Please advise me by email director@aama.com.au or by phone (07) 3349 1447 if you are attending so we can better prepare for the evening.

Best wishes,
Graham Keleher
Chief Instructor

Kagami Baraki is literally translated as the “unveiling of the round mirror” or “mirror opening”; it is a time when students from all Dojo gather for united training, reflect on the year that has past and begin to set goals for the New Year. In our International Organisation training is followed by a Social Event to celebrate the return to training, renewing acquaintances , meet new friends and generally relax. The Little Leopards and The Dragons will train and celebrate together and the Samurai and Adults together. The Times are as per the class schedule. Each member is requested to bring a plate to be shared at the table (Christmas fruit, sandwiches, savouries, etc.) Drinks will be provided free of charge by the Club. Each member is encouraged to attend and be part of the Spirit of our Kagami Baraki.

2006 - In looking back over 2006, I am very pleased with the progress we have made - this year's addition of a 3rd classification in our Children's classes has allowed our instructors to expertly address the different maturation levels that exist in children between 4 years and 17 years.

While we have continued to follow our well known culture of Character Building and Personal Development, our students have also continued to excel in the Sport of Karate with 2 National Champions and numerous State Champions.

The extensive renovations to our dojo (Shunpukan) is now nearing completion and in 2007 we could possibly boast that we have the best in the nation.

2007 - There is certainly progress and excitement built into the upcoming year at our Academy. The calendar of events will reflect this when announced at our Kagami Baraki Training/ Party and also via our first email for 2007. On the mat of the dojo where most of our members' interests lie, we will continue with class content and Instruction Level of International Standard.

Finally, I would like to wish all members and parents a very Happy Christmas and a most prosperous 2007. I look forward to seeing you next year at the Kagami Baraki Training & Parties.

Best wishes,

Graham Keleher
(Shihan)
